Maternity photography celebrates the beauty, anticipation and connection of motherhood during one of life's most special times.
I'm Nikki, a Dorset maternity photographer specialising in natural, relaxed photography that captures the excitement, connection and quiet moments before your baby arrives.
Your maternity session can take place outdoors in one of Dorset's beautiful beaches, woodland or countryside locations, or in the comfort of your own home. There's no need to know how to pose or feel comfortable in front of the camera — I'll gently guide you while allowing plenty of space for natural moments and genuine connection.
My aim is to create timeless maternity photographs that feel authentic to you and beautifully document this chapter of your journey into motherhood.
Outdoor maternity photography in Dorset
Dorset is such a beautiful place for an outdoor maternity photoshoot, particularly if you love natural surroundings and want your photographs to feel relaxed and connected to the landscape.
From sandy beaches like Studland, dramatic coastlines like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door to woodland and countryside like Wareham forest and Upton Country Park, there are so many options to choose from. We can find somewhere that feels right for you and create photographs that capture both your pregnancy and the beautiful Dorset surroundings, but personally, beach maternity sessions are my absolute favourite.
I especially love photographing outdoors when the light is soft and gentle, creating natural, timeless images without making the session feel overly posed.
Maternity Photography at Home
You don't have to head outside to create beautiful maternity photographs.
A maternity session at home can be relaxed, intimate and completely personal to you. We can use the spaces where you naturally spend time together and make use of beautiful natural light.
Whether you want photographs of your bump, quiet moments together as a couple, or photographs that include older children, an at-home session allows us to document this part of your story somewhere that feels comfortable and familiar.
Your home doesn't need to be perfect. The focus is on you, your connection and the anticipation of meeting your baby.
When is the best time for a maternity photoshoot?
Most people choose to have their maternity photographs taken during the later stages of pregnancy, when your bump is beautifully visible but you are hopefully still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session. If I had to put a number on it, I would recommend around 24-32 weeks.
There isn't one perfect week, though. Every pregnancy is different, and mothers who have been pregnant before may find their bumps pop earlier than first-time mums so the best time is the point that feels right for you.
I recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy so we can find a date that works around your due date, your plans and the type of session you'd like.
Maternity photographs with your family
Pregnancy is a huge moment for the whole family, so your maternity session can include the people who are going through this journey with you.
Partners and older children are very welcome, and I love capturing the excitement of waiting to meet a new baby. We'll make time for photographs of you on your own as well as natural moments together as a family.
The photographs don't need to feel formal or heavily posed. A cuddle, holding hands, a little kiss or an excited child talking about the baby can tell the story beautifully. You are also very welcome to bring along scan photos or any other props you want to incorporate into your photoshoot.

Unless you already have a location in mind, we'll discuss exactly what you want and choose a location. I'll also send you a questionnaire as part of the booking process, and give you some guidance on clothing. This helps me to get to know your family a little better before we meet.

during your session
Relax and interact with your family if you're incorporating them too. Whether you're having a solo maternity photoshoot or involving your whole family, I will gently guide and prompt you with movement and fun, rather than any stiff posing.
STEP 03
after your session
You'll receive your carefully edited photographs in your beautiful online gallery via email link and can choose your favourites to download and print, or share the link directly with friends and family.
What should I wear for a maternity photoshoot?
Choose something that makes you feel comfortable and like yourself. Flowing dresses, simple layers and soft, neutral colours can work beautifully, but there is no single “right” outfit for maternity photographs.
For outdoor sessions, think about the location and season as well as what you'll feel comfortable moving around in.
If you're unsure what to wear, don't worry — I'm always happy to offer guidance before your session so you can feel confident about what you've chosen, or if you'd like to take advantage of my client wardrobe of open-fronted maternity dresses to show off your beautiful growing bump, please just ask, I have various colours, styles and sizes and am happy to acquire more if I don't have your size currently available.

When should I book my maternity photoshoot?
It's a good idea to get in touch during your pregnancy so we have plenty of time to find a date that works for you. I recommend booking your session before your 20 week scan, but if you're further along and haven't booked yet, please don't worry — get in touch and I'll do my best to find a suitable date.
When is the best time to have maternity photos taken?
There isn't one perfect time for everyone, as every pregnancy is different. Many people choose to have their photographs taken during the later stages of pregnancy when their bump is beautifully visible, but the most important thing is choosing a time when you're feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session.
For most people, I would recommend booking your photoshoot for between 24 and 32 weeks.
Where do maternity photoshoots take place in Dorset?
We can choose from some of Dorset's beautiful beaches, woodland, countryside and other outdoor locations. I can help you choose somewhere based on the time of year, the type of photographs you'd like and what feels comfortable for you.
If you'd rather stay closer to home, maternity sessions can also take place in the comfort of your own home.
Can my partner and children be involved?
Absolutely! Pregnancy is a special time for the whole family, so partners and older children are very welcome.
We'll capture photographs of you on your own as well as natural moments together, whether that's cuddling, holding hands, talking about the baby or simply enjoying being together.
Can I have my maternity photoshoot at home?
Yes. At-home maternity sessions can be beautifully relaxed and personal. We can use natural light and the spaces that are meaningful to you, creating photographs that document this chapter of your life in a familiar environment.
Your home doesn't need to be perfectly tidy or styled. The focus is on you and your family, not the house!
What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?
Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Flowing dresses, simple outfits and soft, neutral colours can work particularly well with my natural style of photography, but there are no strict rules.
I'm happy to offer guidance on what might work well for your chosen location and the type of photographs you'd like, or I have a variety of styles and sizes of open-fronted maternity dresses you are welcome to borrow as part of your session fee.
What happens if the weather is bad?
For outdoor sessions, I'll keep an eye on the forecast and we'll decide together whether the weather is suitable.
A little cloud or drizzle doesn't necessarily mean we need to cancel, and some of the most beautiful and flattering light can happen on an overcast day. If the weather is genuinely unsuitable, we'll simply look at another date.
Do I need to know how to pose?
Not at all! You don't need any experience in front of the camera.
I'll give you gentle prompts and guidance throughout your session, but I want your photographs to feel natural rather than overly posed. Most of the time you'll simply be interacting with your partner, children or bump while I capture those genuine moments.

Can we have photographs of just me and my bump as well as family ones?
Of course. Your maternity session can include a mixture of photographs. Some of you on your own, some with your partner, some with older children and plenty of natural moments together.
We'll make sure there is time for the photographs that are most important to you.
What happens if my baby arrives before our planned photoshoot?
Babies don't always stick to the schedule!
If your baby arrives before your maternity session, just let me know as soon as you can and we'll work out the best option.
If you want, we can turn it into a newborn or family session instead, and if not I would offer you a full refund.
