Natural, relaxed newborn photography in Dorset
Those first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a complete blur, feeding, cuddling, little stretches of sleep and trying to take in just how tiny they are.
I'm Nikki, a Dorset newborn photographer specialising in natural, relaxed newborn photography that captures those fleeting early days just as they feel. Tiny fingers and toes, sleepy smiles, cuddles, feeding, connection and all the little details you'll want to remember.
My newborn sessions are gentle and baby-led. Rather than expecting your baby to sleep through a series of carefully posed photographs, I'll follow their cues and capture the natural moments that happen between you. Parents, siblings and the wider family can all be part of the story too.
Sessions can take place in the comfort of your own home or outdoors, depending on what feels right for you. My aim is to create beautiful, timeless photographs that feel authentic to your family and bring you straight back to those precious early days.
I capture the images I wish I had of my own children.

A natural approach to newborn photography
My newborn photography is all about connection rather than perfection.
Your baby doesn't need to sleep for the whole session, and you don't need a beautifully styled home or a perfectly organised family. Real life is welcome, and your baby's safety and comfort is always my top priority.
I'll capture the little details alongside the bigger moments, tiny hands wrapped around your finger, a sleepy cuddle on the sofa, a feed, a sibling meeting their new brother or sister, or the way you look at your baby when you think nobody is watching.
These are the moments that disappear so quickly, and they're often the photographs you'll treasure most.
Newborn photography at home in Dorset
There is something incredibly special about photographing your newborn in the place where you're beginning your life together.
A home session means you don't need to pack up your new baby and travel somewhere unfamiliar which means you feel more relaxed. We can use the rooms where you naturally spend time together, your bedroom, the sofa, the nursery or anywhere with beautiful natural light.
Your home doesn't need to be spotless or styled for a magazine. I'll work with what you have and concentrate on the people and moments that matter.
If you're more comfortable at home during those early weeks, a relaxed lifestyle newborn session can be a beautiful way to document this chapter.
when should I book my newborn photoshoot?
If you're planning your newborn photography while you're pregnant, I recommend getting in touch before your baby arrives and pencilling your session in for around 1–2 weeks after your due date.
Of course, babies don't always follow the plan! Once your baby arrives, we'll confirm a date that works for you and your baby, so there is no need to worry if they arrive earlier or later than expected.
If your baby has already arrived, it's not too late to get in touch. While the very early days are lovely to document, there is no single “perfect” age for newborn photography. I'll work with you to create beautiful photographs whatever stage you're at.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT?
Every newborn session is different because every baby is different.
We'll take things at your baby's pace, allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddles and settling when needed. There is never any pressure to rush through the session.
I'll gently guide you when needed, but many of the photographs will come from simply being together, holding your baby, looking at them, cuddling on the sofa or spending time with siblings.
The most important thing is that you and your baby are comfortable. Everything else can wait.
STEP 01

before your session
If you're happy, you can book directly using the link at the bottom of the page. If you need a little more guidance, please feel free to contact me first to talk things through. I'll also send you a questionnaire as part of the booking process, and give you some guidance on clothing. This helps me to get to know your family a little better before we meet.
STEP 02
STEP 02
during your session
Relax and interact with your baby. Lots of cuddles, kisses and whatever feels natural. I'll give you gentle prompts that encourage natural interaction rather than rigid poses.
STEP 03
after your session
You'll receive your carefully edited photographs in your beautiful online gallery via email link and can choose your favourites to download and print, or share the link directly with friends and family.

When should I book my newborn photoshoot?
If you're expecting a baby, I recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy so we can pencil your session in around your due date. Babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, so we'll confirm the exact date once your little one has arrived.
If your baby has already been born, don't worry — it's not too late to get in touch. There isn't one particular age at which your baby has to be photographed, and I'll work with you to create beautiful photographs whenever the time feels right.
What age is best for newborn photography?
There is no single “perfect” age for newborn photographs. Some families love capturing those very early sleepy days, while others prefer to wait until their baby is a little more alert and interactive.
My sessions are baby-led, so rather than working to a strict age or schedule, I'll adapt the session to your baby and the stage they're at.
What happens if my baby won't settle?
That's absolutely fine! Babies don't always follow our plans, and there's no expectation that your baby will sleep through the whole session.
We'll take plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, changing and settling whenever your baby needs it. Some of my favourite photographs happen when babies are awake, stretching, looking around or simply being themselves.
What if my baby needs feeding during the session?
We simply stop and feed them. There is never any need to rush or worry about keeping to a schedule.
Your baby is in charge of the session, so we'll take breaks whenever they're needed. Feeding can also be a beautiful part of your photographs if you'd like it to be, and if you're breastfeeding, it can be a wonderful way to capture your feeding journey.
Can siblings be included in our newborn sessions?
Absolutely. Your new baby becoming part of the family is a huge moment, so I love including siblings in the photographs.
We'll keep things relaxed and won't expect older brothers or sisters to sit perfectly still. We can capture cuddles, little interactions and those first moments together, as well as photographs of your newborn on their own.
Can we have our newborn photoshoot at home?
Yes. Lifestyle newborn photography at home can be incredibly special because you're documenting your baby in the place where you're beginning your life together.
We can use natural light around your home and photograph the ordinary moments — cuddling on the sofa, settling your baby in their room or simply spending time together.
Your house absolutely does not need to be spotless or magazine-ready. I'll concentrate on your family and the moments that matter.
Do you use props for newborn photography?
My approach is natural rather than heavily posed or prop-based. I prefer to focus on your baby and the connection between you rather than creating elaborate setups.
Simple blankets, clothing and meaningful items from your home can be incorporated if they are important to you, but the photographs are always centred around your family.
What should we wear for our newborn photoshoot?
The best thing to wear is something comfortable that feels like you. Neutral, soft colours and simple textures tend to work beautifully with the natural style of my photography, but there are no strict rules.
If you're unsure what to wear, I'm very happy to offer suggestions before your session.
What happens if my baby arrives early or late?
Don't worry, babies have a habit of ignoring our carefully planned dates!
Your initial booking will be based around your due date, and we'll confirm the session date once your baby arrives. If your plans change because your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we'll simply adjust the date where possible.
What if we're exhausted and just don't feel like having a photoshoot?
You have just had a baby — you absolutely do not need to look or feel perfect!
My newborn sessions are relaxed and focused on connection rather than perfection. I'll never expect you to spend the session performing for the camera.
There will be plenty of opportunities for cuddles and natural moments, and you can take breaks whenever you need them. You don't need to have everything together before your photoshoot. You just need yourselves and your baby, and if you prefer I'd focus more on them and less on you, that's fine too.
