Natural, relaxed engagement photography in Dorset

Getting engaged is such an exciting time, and your engagement deserves to be documented just as much as the wedding day itself.

I'm Nikki, a Dorset engagement photographer specialising in natural, relaxed photography that captures the connection, excitement and personality between you.

If you're not naturally comfortable in front of a camera, don't worry,  most couples aren't! You won't be expected to stand around awkwardly posing or know what to do with your hands. I'll gently guide you through simple interactions and prompts while giving you plenty of space to just enjoy being together.

The result is a collection of photographs that feels natural, personal and completely like you.

Why have an engagement photoshoot?

An engagement photoshoot isn't just about having some lovely photographs of the two of you. It's a chance to pause and enjoy this exciting part of your relationship before all the wedding planning takes over.

Your photographs can be used for save-the-dates, wedding invitations, your wedding website or simply shared with friends and family. But they're also something you'll be able to look back on in years to come and remember exactly how you felt during this chapter of your lives.

And if you're planning to have me photograph your wedding, an engagement session is a lovely opportunity for us to get to know each other before the big day. You'll get a feel for how I work, and you'll discover that having your photographs taken doesn't need to feel awkward or uncomfortable.

Relaxed engagement photography for camera-shy couples

If you're thinking, "We're terrible at having our photograph taken", you're definitely not alone!

I don't believe you need to be naturally confident in front of a camera to have beautiful photographs.

Instead of giving you lots of complicated poses, I'll give you things to do together, like walking, chatting, cuddling, holding hands, exploring and simply spending time together.

Sometimes I'll offer a little direction, and sometimes I'll step back and let the moment happen.

The best photographs are often the ones where you've forgotten I'm there.

Beautiful engagement photography locations in Dorset

Dorset gives us so many beautiful places for an engagement photoshoot.

We could head to the coast for dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and beautiful evening light, explore woodland and countryside, or choose somewhere that has a special meaning to you both.

Some of the areas I love for photography include Studland, Swanage, Lulworth Cove, Wareham and the wider Dorset coast and countryside. The location doesn't have to be somewhere famous or traditionally romantic. In fact, I'd much rather choose somewhere that feels like you.

If there's a place where you had your first date, got engaged, regularly walk the dog or simply love spending time together, that could be the perfect location for your photographs.

What happens during an engagement photoshoot?

Before your session, we'll have a chat about what you're looking for and choose a location that suits you both.

When we meet, there is no expectation that you'll immediately feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. We'll take our time, have a wander and let things happen naturally. I'll give you gentle prompts when you need them, but there will be plenty of opportunities for genuine moments too.

You don't need to rehearse anything or learn how to pose.

Just come as you are, enjoy spending some time together and let me take care of the photographs.

What should we wear for our engagement photos?

The most important thing is to wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

There is no need to dress identically or choose formal outfits unless that's what you want to do. If you want to get dressed up though, I'm all here for it!

For outdoor engagement photography, I usually recommend choosing clothes that allow you to move comfortably and that fit the location and season. If you're unsure what to wear, I'm always happy to offer suggestions before your session.

Engagement photographs that feel like you

Your engagement photographs don't need to look like everyone else's.

Whether you're happiest walking along the beach, exploring the countryside, sitting together somewhere quiet or simply laughing with each other, we'll create a session around your relationship.

My aim isn't to manufacture perfect moments.

It's to notice the real ones.

The smiles, the laughter, the little looks, the excitement and the connection between you.

Those are the photographs you'll want to keep.

Ready to celebrate your engagement?

If you're looking for a Dorset engagement photographer who will keep things relaxed, natural and completely free from awkward posing, I'd love to hear from you.

Tell me a little about you, your plans and what you're looking for from your engagement photographs, and we can start planning your session.

Timeline

STEP 01

before your session

Unless you already have a location in mind, we'll discuss exactly what you want and choose a location. I'll also send you a questionnaire as part of the booking process, and give you some guidance on clothing. This helps me to get to know your family a little better before we meet.

STEP 02
STEP 02

during your session

Relax and interact naturally with each other. I'll give you gentle prompts that encourage natural interaction rather than rigid poses. Think fun, playful energy rather than sitting still saying "cheese!"

faq's

Where do engagement photoshoots take place in Dorset?

Engagement photoshoots can take place anywhere across Dorset. We can choose from beaches, woodland, countryside or another location that has a special meaning to you. I'll help you choose somewhere that works well for the type of photographs you're looking for.

We're really awkward in front of the camera, can you help?

Absolutely! Most couples aren't used to having professional photographs taken, so you definitely don't need to arrive knowing how to pose. I'll give you gentle prompts and things to do together so that your photographs feel natural rather than staged.

Do we need to be engaged to book an engagement photoshoot?

Not necessarily. Engagement photography is designed to celebrate this exciting stage of your relationship, but there's no rule about who can book a session. If you'd love some beautiful photographs together, you're welcome to get in touch.

Can we choose a location that's special to us?

Definitely. In fact, I love it when couples choose somewhere that has a personal meaning. Your first date location, favourite beach, regular walking spot or somewhere connected to your relationship can make your photographs even more meaningful.

Can our engagement photos be used for our wedding invitations?

Yes. Your engagement photographs can be perfect for save-the-dates, wedding invitations, wedding websites, thank-you cards and social media. Just let me know what you're planning to use them for or if you have any specific ideas and we can make sure we capture a good variety of images.

Can we have our engagement photoshoot at the beach?

Absolutely. Dorset has some beautiful beaches and coastal locations that work brilliantly for engagement photography and it's one of my favourite places for a photoshoot because of the wide open, beautifully soft expanse that allows the photos to really focus on you. We can plan your session around the best light and choose a location that suits you both.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Don't worry! Dorset weather can be unpredictable, so we'll keep an eye on the forecast and discuss the options if the weather isn't suitable. Depending on the conditions, you may want to embrace the weather, choose a different location or rearrange your session.

Can we bring our dog to our photoshoot?

Of course. If your dog is an important part of your lives, I'd love to include them in some of your photographs. We'll make sure there's also time for some photographs of just the two of you.

How long does an engagement photoshoot take?

I'll allow enough time for you to relax and get comfortable rather than rushing through a list of poses. Sessions normally last around an hour but we'll make sure there is plenty of time to capture a good variety of photographs.

Can we book an engagement photoshoot if you're photographing our wedding?

Yes! An engagement session can be a lovely way for us to get to know each other before your wedding day and for you to become comfortable in front of my camera. By the time your wedding arrives, the photographs should feel much more natural and familiar.
