Wondering when to book a newborn photographer? Here's everything you need to know about booking your newborn photography session, including when to have your photographs taken and what happens if your baby doesn't arrive exactly when expected.

Having a baby is such a huge, life-changing moment, and those first few weeks can feel like a complete blur. One minute you're waiting patiently for your little one to arrive and the next you're wondering how it's already been a week!

Newborn photography is a lovely way to preserve those tiny details and genuine moments before your baby changes yet again.

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

"When should we book our newborn photography session?"

The simple answer is: as early as you can, ideally during your pregnancy.

But don't worry if you've already had your baby. There are still plenty of options, and there's no such thing as being "too late" to capture your baby's first weeks.

When should you book a newborn photographer?

I recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy, ideally once you're into your second trimester and have a good idea of your due date. You don't need to know the exact date you'll want your photographs taken. We can work from your due date and pencil in a suitable timeframe, then confirm the details once your baby arrives. If you're booking directly through the website, simply choose a date approximately 1–2 weeks after your due date. Once your baby arrives, get in touch and we can adjust the date if necessary.

Booking ahead gives you the best chance of finding a date that works for you, particularly if you're hoping for a session during those early newborn days. And if you've only just started thinking about newborn photography, don't worry, it's always worth asking about availability, even if your baby has already arrived.

When should newborn photographs actually be taken?

There's no strict rule about the "right" age for newborn photographs.

For a traditional posed newborn session, photographers often recommend the first couple of weeks because babies tend to be sleepier and more curled up during this time.

My approach is a little different.

I offer relaxed, lifestyle newborn photography, which means I don't need your baby to sleep for the entire session or fit into a particular posing routine. Instead, we'll capture your baby as they really are, being cuddled, fed, settled, stretched out, sleeping, looking around and interacting with you.

This means you don't need to worry about missing a particular window. Whether your baby is a few days old or a little older, we can create beautiful photographs that capture this special stage.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

Babies have a funny habit of ignoring our carefully planned calendars! If your baby arrives earlier or later than your due date, that's completely fine. When you book, we'll use your due date to give us an idea of when your session is likely to take place. Once your baby arrives, we'll get in touch and arrange a date that works for everyone. There's no need to panic if your baby decides to make their entrance on a completely different day to the one you were expecting.

Can I book a newborn session after my baby is born?

Absolutely.

If you've already had your baby and suddenly realise you'd love some professional photographs, please don't assume you've missed your chance. Lifestyle newborn photography isn't about creating a perfectly posed photograph of a tiny sleeping baby.

It's about documenting this chapter of your family's life.

Your baby might be awake. They might need feeding. They might want cuddles. They might cry. They might need changing. All of that is completely normal.

And actually, those little moments can become some of the photographs you treasure most.

What happens during a lifestyle newborn photography session?

My newborn sessions are relaxed and baby-led. There's no expectation that your baby will sleep throughout the session, and there's no need to rush through a list of poses.

We'll take our time and allow plenty of opportunity for feeding, changing and cuddles.

I'll photograph the little details, tiny fingers, sleepy stretches and those beautiful newborn expressions, alongside the bigger moments between you and your baby. I'll also gently guide you when needed, but I don't expect you to know how to pose.

You just need to enjoy your baby.

Can siblings and partners be included?

Of course!

One of the things I love most about lifestyle newborn photography is that the photographs can tell the story of your whole family. We can capture photographs of your baby with you, your partner and any older brothers or sisters. And don't worry if your older children aren't perfectly behaved throughout the session!

They don't need to sit still and smile on command. We'll let them interact naturally with their new sibling and capture those genuine moments of connection. For families, those photographs can become incredibly special because they show what your family looked like at that exact moment in time.

What should we wear for a newborn photoshoot?

There's no need for everyone to dress identically or wear anything particularly fancy.

I usually recommend choosing comfortable, neutral or coordinating colours that feel like you. Think soft, simple and comfortable rather than outfits that you'll spend the whole session worrying about.

Your home and your family are the focus of the photographs, so you don't need to create a perfectly styled or perfectly tidy environment either. I'll work with the space and light you already have. Have a look at my blog on why in home newborn photography feels more relaxed.

Do newborn photographs have to be posed?

Not at all.

If you love beautifully posed newborn photographs, that's completely fine, but my style is much more focused on natural moments and connection.

I want to capture your baby being held by you, the way they curl into your chest, the look on your face when you're watching them and the tiny details you'll wish you could remember forever.

Some of my favourite newborn photographs aren't the perfectly posed ones.

They're the ones that make you think:

"That's exactly what it was like."

Choosing a newborn photographer in Dorset

When you're choosing a newborn photographer, I think it's important to find someone whose style and approach feels right for you. Look at their portfolio and think about how you want to remember this time.

Do you want highly posed studio photographs? Or would you prefer something relaxed and natural that captures your family interacting together?

If you're drawn to photographs that feel genuine, connected and a little bit imperfect in all the best ways, lifestyle newborn photography could be a wonderful fit for you.

I'm based in Dorset and photograph newborns and families in a relaxed, natural style, creating photographs that focus on connection rather than perfection.

Your baby's first weeks go so quickly

When you're in the middle of sleepless nights, feeding, nappies and trying to work out what day it is, it can be difficult to imagine ever missing these moments. But one day, your baby won't fit so perfectly into your arms anymore. Those tiny fingers will get bigger. Their little faces will change. And you'll probably wonder how it happened so quickly.

That's why I love newborn photography.

It's not about creating perfect photographs. It's about remembering how it felt to have your tiny new person at home. If you're expecting a baby and would like to chat about a newborn photography session in Dorset, I'd love to hear from you.
