One of the biggest worries parents have before a family photoshoot is whether their children will cooperate. The truth is, children don't need to sit perfectly still or smile consistently for beautiful photos, and having raised five of them myself and photographed many more, they most often don't!
The best way to prepare children is to keep things relaxed and positive. If you are stressed or anxious, they will sense it and will react accordingly. Avoid telling them they have to behave or smile for the camera, but talk to them about the session as a fun adventure.
Bringing snacks, comfort items and arriving early to your session to let them settle into their environment can all help them feel calm and comfortable. Choosing a location where they are free to run and play also makes a huge difference.
During my sessions, I use gentle prompts, games and natural interaction rather than forced posing. If your child doesn't want to do something, I don't push it and we try something different. Letting me know your child's favourite things can sometimes help, as I can talk to them about them, and this allows your child's personality to shine through naturally.
Some of the most beautiful and meaningful photos come from the in-between moments, cuddles, laugher, tickles and curiosity and always a little chaos. Real connection will always matter more than perfection.
