Dorset really is spoilt for beautiful places to take family photographs. From sandy beaches and the Jurassic Coast to quiet woodland walks, open fields and the rolling hills of the countryside, there are so many options to choose from.
When it comes to family photography, I love locations where children can simply be themselves. Somewhere they can run, explore, climb, collect sticks or stones, have a little wander and, most importantly, spend time with their family without feeling like they have to sit still and pose for the camera. If there’s a place that already has a special meaning to your family, even better!
Beach photography in Dorset
Beach sessions are one of my favourites, and we’re incredibly lucky to have so many beautiful beaches along the Dorset coast. The open space, natural textures and gorgeous light make them perfect for relaxed, natural family photographs.
There’s no need for everyone to stand in a line and smile at the camera. Your children can run barefoot through the sand, splash in the shallows, search for shells or simply enjoy being outside with you. I’ll be there to capture all those little moments as they happen.
Sunset sessions can be particularly beautiful. The hour or so before the sun disappears is often referred to as ‘golden hour’, when the light becomes softer and warmer. It can give photographs that lovely golden glow that works so well with a relaxed family session.
Woodland and nature photography
Woodlands and nature reserves offer something completely different from the coast. They’re peaceful, full of interesting things for children to discover and give us lots of variety during a session.
Spring and summer bring fresh greenery and wildflowers, while autumn gives us beautiful earthy colours and crunchy leaves underfoot. And although snow is definitely not something we can rely on in Dorset, when we do get it, the woods can look absolutely magical!
These locations work particularly well for families who want their photographs to feel natural and full of movement, rather than spending the whole session posing.
Parks and open spaces
Sometimes you don't need a dramatic backdrop at all. A quiet local park, field or open space can be the perfect setting for family photographs.
These locations can be especially lovely for younger children who might feel a little overwhelmed somewhere busy, or for families who simply want a relaxed session without having to travel too far.
With plenty of room to run around and explore, children often forget the camera is even there. And that's when some of my favourite photographs happen.
Choosing the right location for your family
There really isn't one ‘perfect’ location for every family. The best place for your photos is somewhere that feels comfortable for you and your children.
As a Dorset family and couples photographer, I’m always happy to help you choose somewhere that suits your family, your children and the kind of photographs you’d love to have. Whether you're happiest on the beach, wandering through the woods, exploring the countryside or curled up together at home, we can find a setting that feels like you.
Dorset has so many beautiful places to explore, and I'm lucky enough to photograph families in them all the time. The location is just the backdrop — the real focus of your photographs will always be the people you love.
